Why did I create this site?
I created this site because I’ve been getting way too distracted over the past few years and really made this for three main reasons…
- To document all the random things I’m going to do to remove distractions.
- To hold me accountable. If I know that I will have to post results, successes, failures, etc then it push me to stick with it
- To share everything so maybe someone will be inspired to remove distractions from their life.
I’ll explore the different tools, methods, books, rituals, tactics, etc to remove distraction from my life.
Who am I?
My name is Kevin, own a business, no kids (yet), married, just purchased my first home last year, and I’m into fitness. That should suffice for now because those are the main buckets that are affected when I get distracted. Just enough context to get started.
What do I mean by distractions?
For me a distraction is anything that takes my time away from what I had planned, what I want to do, or pulls me away from I’m working on in the moment.
I’ll admit, that is pretty vague but it’s almost like the saying “you’ll know it, when you see it”.
For example, watching a movie wouldn’t be a distraction if I had that planned or was spontaneous when I had nothing else really going on for the day. But let’s say I had planned to do some house work and I decided to watch a movie because I just didn’t want to do the house work, in that case the movie would’ve been a distraction.
That’s my definition right now but it could change as I try things.
Why now?
I’m starting this on October 31st, 2026. It just happened to be Halloween.
But lately at work things have slipped through the cracks that have caused my team a lot of stress and they’ve had to scramble when I missed something because I was distracted and didn’t do what I was supposed to do. There are a bunch of other things that I’ve noticed…
- My attention span is totally shot. Can’t concentrate on a task for longer than 5 mins
- My ability to remember details about what I’m working on in the moment is lower. Like if there are 10 steps to do the thing, after 3 steps I have to pause to figure out where I am in the project. I can’t hold those details in my head.
- My social media usage has gone up
- My video watch time has has gone up
- My satisfaction from social media and watching videos is at an all time low. I don’t somewhat enjoy it anymore. I just feel indifferent while using these.
- I’m comparing myself to who I see online waaaay more. Lately it’s gotten worse because I’m comparing myself against all types of people, from business people, fitness influencers, and random accounts that I get put into my algorithm.
- I’ve been staying up late on weekends (typically Fridays) and it causes the rest of my weekend to go out of whack.
- I haven’t been eating what I want to eat because the time I would’ve spent at the grocery store or cooking, was spent elsewhere.
- I’ve missed workouts because my time get sucked up on other things.
It’s all those things wrapped up together that pushed me to start now.
Is there AI in here?
No. At the time of writing this…October 31st, 2026, AI is everywhere. Every product I use has some AI component to it. Post, blogs, and articles seem to have the same format, cadence, and style that the current version of ai is pushing out.
I don’t use AI for any writing I do on this site, from the topic selection, planning, scheduling, writing, grammar checking, editing. The whole point is clear up my distractions and thinking, can’t really do that if I’m just using ai for everything. Just thought I’d mention it because AI text slop is everywhere right now.
Why the name?
“Goodbye, Rectangle” – Is saying goodbye to the distractions in life. These distractions, for me, often come in the form of a rectangle…A phone screen, computer screen, tv screen, etc. So it’s saying goodby to all that. I can’t literally get rid of my phone or computer but it’s the distraction that come from these things.
So without further ado it’s time to say Goodbye, Rectangle.
